Traditional African Homestays Southern Africa

Traditional African Homestays Southern Africa (TAHS-SA) was created to bridge the gap between travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences and rural communities seeking sustainable opportunities. Founded by Kylie and Cameron Murray, TAHS-SA connects guests to immersive heritage homestays in South Africa, where you can stay with local families, discover traditional village life, and directly support community development.

How it works

Our approach combines training, hospitality, and community investment. Each homestay family receives professional support and a “homestay kit” to ensure comfort for travellers while keeping the authenticity of village life intact.

With TAHS-SA you can:

  • Stay with local families in unique communities near familiar tourist routes in safe, comfortable homes.
  • Join cultural experiences and daily routines — from traditional cooking and floor-making to beadwork and dance.
  • Explore rural villages across Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape.

There are currently 5 communities ready to host guests. Each TAHS-SA community offers a unique cultural experience in a rural village South Africa, hosted by families trained in hospitality and proud to share their traditions.

After winning Gold in WTM Africa’s Responsible Tourism Award in the category Championing Cultural Diversity and successful participation in numerous travel trade shows post pandemic, Traditional African Homestays Southern Africa is ready to scale up homestay and community tourism experiences in Africa. We have some exciting new homestay development plans on our To Do list and we are always open to new partners and projects.
