Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) is Africa’s leading responsible tourism certification program and was pioneered in South Africa. It is also active in Zambia, Mozambique, Uganda and Tanzania. Since May 2025 I am a member of the board but my involvement with FTT dates back to 2011.
FTT-certified businesses use the FTT label as a way of signifying their commitment to fair and responsible tourism:
- fair wages and working conditions
- fair purchasing and operations
- equitable distribution of benefits
- respect for human rights, culture and the environment.
FTT-certified businesses go through an independent audit process every 3 years. The FTT criteria are summarised in a downloadable pdf. After a successful audit they carry the following label:
An entry level option called FTT Engaged was introduced in 2024 and was piloted in Uganda but is open to any new member who needs more time to work towards full certification.
Want to know who is FTT-certified in Africa? Check the list on the FTT website.
