    ITB Berlin 2024

Fair Trade Tourism exhibitors at ITB Berlin 2024

Finding sustainable suppliers in destinations remains a challenge but there is movement in the right direction. If you are coming to ITB Berlin and would like to connect with sustainable suppliers from Africa then I have some great recommendations for you.

Fair Trade Tourism exhibitors at ITB

Did you know that Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) certification is now active in African destinations like Zambia and (soon) Uganda? Several of the South African FTT companies will be coming to ITB:

    • Three Tree Hill Lodge in Kwa Zulu Natal and its wonderful Africa Safari Collective lodge partners can be found on the South Africa Tourism stand in Hall 20 - stand 201.

    • For responsible Big 5 experiences in the Eastern Cape consider Amakhala Game Reserve’s Safari Lodge. Also in Hall 20 - Stand 201 on the SAT stand.

    • Gansbaai-based Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises are the best choice for responsible shark cage diving and whale watching cruises. They also have an amazing marine volunteering program. Find them on the Nomad Africa stand in Hall 20 - stand 104.

    • Awardwinning Transfrontier Parks Destinations (TFPD) which manages favourites such as !Xaus Lodge in the Khalahari and Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge in the Drakensberg has got an exciting new property Piggs Peak Hotel in Eswatini. The Eswatini stand is also in Hall 20 – stand 301.

For an overview of current FTT-certified businesses check the FTT website

CBI Netherlands sustainable tourism market access program Uganda and Ethiopia

The Dutch government is currently supporting sustainable tourism businesses in Uganda and Ethiopia. These DMCs specialise in adventure, culture and communities but also offer tailormade wildlife & conservation focused itineraries. Several are Travelife Partner/Certified.

    UGANDA

    ETHIOPIA

For more information about these companies check the ITB brochure.

    Traditional African Homestays

Last but not least, if South African homestays and community tourism are something that you would like include into trips then I can tell you more about a wonderful & award-winning initiative called Traditional African Homestays TAHS-SA. This is a growing network of villages throughout South Africa that can host your guests and uses tourism to uplift communities. Working with international tour operators is welcomed and there is a dedicated team of tourism professionals that manages B2B relationships. They will not be at ITB but I can tell you more.

I hope these recommendations have triggered your interest? I will be based in Hall 20 moving between the stands mentioned above and am available for questions about FTT’s activities in Africa, CBI and the homestay network.

If you have trouble reaching the businesses directly then do get in touch and I will connect you. Looking forward to seeing you at ITB!
